With the G5 OLED TV series release, LG announced plans to become the world leader in premium TV production, despite that it trails Samsung in mini LED TV shipments. To achieve this, it intends to compete on processing hardware and TV operating system software.

While you'd be hard pressed to find a OLED TV that is rated higher than a LG model, it surely is NOT because of its 'webOS' but rather the picture quality. :)

As far as the internal Firmware/Software running on the 'SmartTV' goes, seemingly much like ANY network connected appliance these days if allowed the TV will weekly/monthly update itself for no other reason but to push LG content.

YES, you read that right - LG content.

LG it seems has its own 'media hub' where they would wish you to sign up for an account and then pay for 'premium channels'. Even WITHOUT an account a internet connected LG TV will display 'deals' and 'special offers' (along with other unwanted or asked for) advertisements in the upper right corner of your screen each time the TV is turned on. (the TV may also bring up a 'channels' menu on the left side of the screen all on its own)

Yup, embedded commercials on TV interface make the TV seem cheap.
Best is to no connect the TV to the internet and use a proper media center (or HTPC).

All advertising can be disabled on LG TV's, certainly on my G4 it's just a matter of disabling a couple of settings in the menu. No advertising.

Also the streaming apps and upscaling on the G4 are far superior to most (if not all) media players on the market. So not connecting your TV to the internet in this situation is for fools.
I only use my media player (Shield Pro) for watching Blu-ray rips now, that is the ONLY media function on which it performs better than the G4.

Yeah right... Who wants an extra couple of hundred nits extra screen output? (LG update late 2024)
Of course nobody wants DTS:X (profile 2) support for streaming (coming soon to an LG update near you).
