I got the confirmation from "Embark | Dusty" that the change was in fact intended.

He said the following:

The only way to work on it or tweak it is in live and we are just testing things. But no action will be taken on any account using it, it is just currently in "rough and unsupported" state

On a further question why it was bot announced publically he said:

I think it's too shaky to send too many people to try it, just yet.
