Not long after its list price has finally dropped from US$379.99 to a more realistic US$159.99, the Samsung 980 PRO 2 TB SSD (MZ-V8P2T0B) drops below US$140. While the 13% discount is not impressive, the US$139.99 price makes it a pretty good deal, in line with the US$79.99 regular price tag of the 1 TB version.

This is NOT "Pro". This is a drive for amateurs on a lousy 3D TLC, which a priori is not capable of storing data for 10 years without cell refresh. Any grade at an acceptable reading speed. And with wear of more than 10%, it becomes physically impossible - you will 100% lose data after 10 years.

Pro class only MLC and SLC. Where are they?

Here's a MLC drive with SLC cache - https://www.storagereview.com/review/sandisk-extreme-ii-ssd-review
I have the 128 GB one in my desktop and it's at 31% life after less than 68,000 hours. Very happy with it performance-wise, but when it comes to its lifespan... P.S. I use it as Windows/boot drive, but I am not installing/uninstalling programs on it often or run torrents on it. Sure, there's the browser cache on it, but still...

We are talking about capacious modern 3D MLC/3D SLC discs. There are practically none left. This clearly shows that in reality there is no progress. Progress is an improvement in storage time with almost no drop in reading speed after 10 years.

3D TLC/QLC/PLC is a road to nowhere. This is a technological dead end of storage systems.
