What on Earth could the phrase, "not-so-popular CMR drive" possibly mean? CMR drives are far and away the most popular drives because they do not overlap tracks like some of the newer schemes, and are therefore vastly superior in terms of data security. Any professional storage operation, like cloud storage or data farms, etc., has a strong preference for CMR, and home users should too.

Can anyone tell me if these drives can be used to replace faulty drives in WD My Book Duo units? I know those things only take a specific WD drive. I'm fairly sure these are the ones, but wanted to ask someone who would know better than I so I don't drop $100ish for nothing. Thanks!!

You are right, I edited it. It was a confusion on my side. I mixed "sometimes could have slightly worse write performance" with "overall worse performance" when filling up. Thank you for pointing out the mistake!

Did you try WD's support service? I am sure they could help. Also, if you drop money on new drives to replace those in the My Book Duo units, you could just buy some affordable HDD racks and build your DiY external drives with their help.

Looks like the price is now down to $249.99 or about $15.63 a gigabyte.  That is 1.563 pennies a megabyte for those who remember using this metric for HDD pricing last millennium.
