In a court ruling that sets a precedence for other car crashes with active Tesla Autopilot in the defendant's corner, the driver-assist feature has been cleared of any wrongdoing. Driver negligence was deemed the cause of the crash, and the jurors were adamant that the Model S gave plenty of indications it is not a self-driving car.

Your example is flawed, but not in a way that defends the US judicial system. What you are talking about are class action lawsuits which in US are effectively a scam. To give a better example that fits a notebook forum, the class action nvidia lawsuit

In the Nvidia class action lawsuit, it was found out that nvidia knew the gpus they made were defective. They effectively bribed manufacturers with money to continue using faulty gpus, and cranking up the fans above their rated limits causing most laptops to fail after warranty ran out

As you can imagine, the consumers won that class action lawsuit. The amount won was large and the "humble" lawyer only took only 10%. Sure, the sum of hundreds of millions seems like a lot of money, and the agreement on paper was that people would get laptops of equivalent or better. At least that is what most of the media likes to paint it as

The reality is far more bs. After the class action lawsuit was settled, the lawyer agreed with nvidia that replacing low/mid range gaming notebooks with netbooks is "equal or better". Of course the plaintiffs didn't agree with their own lawyer. At which point the class action lawyer said "too bad, take it or leave it"

After much work, a lawyer who actually cared helped represent the plaintiffs against the settlement. The judge gave 10 minutes to hear the case. At which point the old lawyer brought a "specialist" who showed documents of how the dual core netbook outperforms the gaming notebooks in microsoft word due to their "dual cores". The judge who probably couldn't turn on the computer without calling his grandkids bought it and dismissed the case

I wouldn't be surprised if that redbull case is the same. Because only 1-2% of funds set aside for class action lawsuits actually reach consumers. The whole class action is just a game where the lawyer negotiates terms of how much they company is willing to bribe him to sweep things under the carpet. As the lawyers payment is independent of how much consumers actually get. If anything, they have financial interest to minimize how much consumers get as it makes companies more likely to settle

You are the pig, they are the butcher, the class action lawyer is the chef. The "settlement win" is how they plan to cut you up and roast you.

As for why your comparison is flawed, I am sure you guessed. Class actions are a different beast than regular lawsuits. Regular lawsuits are much harder to win as there is less pressure to settle and many refuse to settle because settlements for them tend to be small which means you have to actually have merit to win. Class action, you don't need much merit, the company risks far more losses if they actually lose. Thus it is best to settle which gets reported as a "win". But only ones who win are the class action lawyers

Aka, in US class action lawsuits are legalized fraud
