New solid-state battery coating nearly doubles volumetric energy density

Researchers at University of Texas at Austin have managed to crack the code of a solid-state battery without the traditional electrode pair. Their new copper foil coating allows for 95% higher volumetric density than traditional batteries.

Maybe these technologies really have big progress in labs, but the authorities are afraid to give people a hand military grenade in the yours hands, because, the energy intensity (and instant energy out in case of problems) of batteries with 4-5 times more capacity at the same weight as it is now - will lead to exactly this result - in the case of an instantaneous chain reaction of heat release, the effect will be like from a military grenade burst. Especially laptop much more big batteries. Even now, the authorities do not allow large-capacity lithium-ion batteries to be transported on aircraft at the limits of modern energy density for lithium-on techology.
Now imagine if you had a military grenade in your back pocket all the time with an unknown state of the pin...

The only reactive material in Lion batteries is the Lithium itself. If a technology does not increase the amount of lithium in a battery then it will not be more explosive than others. Current tech is no way near the theoretical maximum energy that the lithium in current batteries can store. Many battery improvements are specifically meant to address the safety side of battery improvements (puncture, heat protection). This article mentions that this novel tech mitigates dendrite formation - one of the causes of battery degradation that can lead them to explode.
As long as someone can demonstrate that their new tech is safe then it will be approved. And if time proves that they were wrong then it will only be dealt as a consequence (lawsuits, recalls)

As the first commentator correctly wrote above and I confirm this - if all the declarations in the press over the past 15 years turned out to be true and working solutions, the battery capacity would be at least 5 times higher, and the number of cycles would reach 5000 to 25% capacity loss. There is none of this. What can be interpreted in different ways - an unsuccessful attempt by another startup to knock out money for a comfortable existence of its cunning owners, or that most of these really working technologies are deliberately put on the cloth precisely because of the real fears I indicated above. And how real - few people know, because. journalists do not even try to support and monitor such startups further, i.e. simply do not do their job and a conditional contract with society.

Starting to get tired of all the new battery tech news articles that are actually material science research discoveries that will take decades to solve for, if at all, and incorporate into products at scale and cost effective. Its great though that so much research and progress is being made. It just shows that it is extremely difficult to solve.

No, the problem is a little different. When they mean 2X, 4X, 10X and etc, they generally mean like when you have a CD/DVD/Bluray drive

A CD drive 1X is 153.6 kB/s, while a 1X DVD drive is 1385.0 kB/s. So DVD is 9X faster than CD.

But it is still way slower than a 52X CD drive which would be 7987.2 kB/s

The same applies when you hear them talk about X times more dense. They don't actually mean current LION batteries, they mean X times more than 1X LION batteries

So while they may have higher potential over time, just like DVDs did. CDs were still a better buy for a few years unless you really needed it.

Sorry, what are you talking about? The instant energy of pretty much any battery would be way less than say gasoline because not only are batteries less energy dense (your gains are on efficiency), they are often compartmentalize into modules and cells. So your limit will always be a single cell. Otherwise, pressurize almost anything and it can be a deadly weapon.

No, what reacts in the lithium ion battery isn't the lithium, the lithium is in hardware form and as dangerous(as far as flammability) as sodium in table salt or potassium in a banana. What ignites is the fluorocarbon liquid electrolyte. One of the advantage of moving to solid state or dry electrolytes is huge decrease in flammability.

In reality, the fastest DVD drives still read data more slowly when compared to disc read times, even at maximum speeds. Because even the maximum reading speed of a BD in commercially available drives does not correspond proportionally to the increase in capacity compared to CDs.

Something like a dead end in the HDD - with a disk capacity of, for example, 1TB, the read speed was 100-110Mb/s in 2008, which gradually dropped to 40-50Mb/s of the disk end. With a capacity of 20TB now, HDD reads data at a maximum speed of 250-350MBMb/s, i.e. even the peak speed increased only 3-3.5 times, and the capacity 20 times!
This discrepancy gradually leads to problems with the necessary speed of copying information from all media and time for it. Which leads to a fundamental impasse according to various other criteria, outside the growth of the capacity itself.

And if we follow an analogy, the same can be said about batteries.
