According to word on the grapevine, Qualcomm's next-gen chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will manage to equal A16 Bionic in CPU performance. Its actual rival, the A17 Bionic, looks set to retain a significant advantage, however.

Qualcomm as a chip giant isn't it embarrassing to be beaten by an allinone tech giant?

Geekbench is one benchmark only and not telling the whole story.  This is actually good for competition as customers will benefit in the long run.  I just wish that Kirin is still making chipsets, as that way customers will benefit from 5 different options: Apple Axx series, Samsung Exynos, Qualcomm Snapdragon, Mediatek Dimensity, and Huawei Kirin.  If you are an iPhone or Mac person, then Apple is the only option but in the Android, Windows, and Chromebook space, you can have more mobile chipsets options.

20% is insignificant in almost all scenarios people do here.

Until they enable new use cases which are widely useful, it's fine.

I mean, it's conceivable that A17 could be benchmarked based on engineering samples, but 8 gen 3?  It's release is easily more than nine months away;  how can they have engineering samples already?

More like seven months away.

So according to your saying, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is 20% faster in multi-process and 5% slower in single process compared to A16 bionic.
Still you say "it barely matches".
One would argue your math is questionable or your weighted average hugely favors single core processing.
I guess in today's world of should be exactly the other way around, and in that case the new Snapdragon would be noticeability better than A16.

The funny thing about synthetic benchmarks, they have almost no relevance to real world usage. in the hand the iPhone 14 does not feel any faster than high end Androids and does nothing much faster at, even a few generations ago when the Apple SoC were "vastly" faster.

Who cares, all these phones are freakishly powerful and have an SoC more than capable of handling anything you throw at them. Buy the phone that gives you the best experience and value.

Benchmarks from Geekbench 5 cannot be compared with results from Geekbench 6, try it for yourself, Geekbench 6 scores are always way higher.

funny ? (Fanboy Qualcomm) Qualcomm's SoC is fast. Why is it so hard to work with Nuvia (former Apple) for factual news. Qualcomm's goal can compete with Apple's socks. (here not a fanboy. technology connoisseur)

It's a no brainer that the upcoming apple a17 bionic chip will be superior to the upcoming Qualcomm snapdragon 8 gen 3 performance wise just based on it's 3nm process vs qualcomm's 4nm. But in addition, apple iphones have always had superior hardware-software optimization with it's iOS OS vs android OS based smartphones so with that apple iPhone 15 pro/ultra will be the performance king, something that gamers with deep pockets will appreciate.
