The new Apple M2 Max and M2 Pro chips have become the latest chart champions in PassMark's laptop CPU single-thread benchmark. The previous leader, the Apple M2, is pushed down to third, and it is just ahead of a trio of Alder Lake-HX parts. The M2 Max and M2 Pro produced decent results but still have to face-off against Intel's Raptor Lake-HX mobile processors.

Let's consider the power efficiency... the discussion is immediately over. Apple will stay far ahead, even more when operating without a socket.

After 2.5 years since the release of M1, the IPC of the M2 Max remains the same, since the 10-15% single core performance increase is coming from the higher CPU frequency.

Zero CPU architecture improvement after 2.5 years. This is really disappointing for a trillion dollar company.

From Notebookcheck: "The M2 Max is manufactured in 5 nm at TSMC (second generation) and integrates 40 billion transistors. The power consumption of the CPU part is up to 36 Watt according to powermetrics. When fully loading the CPU and GPU cores, the chip uses up to 89 Watt and the CPU part is limited to 25 Watt."

Also from their site: "The CPU (Intel Core i9-13900HX) is still produced in a further improved 10nm FinFET process (Intel 7) that allows the higher clock speeds. The power consumption is specified at 55W base power up to 157 Watt max."

So Apple's 89w to Intel's 157. Barely double, not the 10x you think.

Of course it will beat M2... it'll also be a nice space heater and sound like you live next to the airport just opening a couple Chrome tabs... lmao.

So no mention of AMD's Dragon range ir Phoenix Point APUS'. Dragon Range HX processors will obliterate Raptor Lake HX in efficiency in the 35-65W range. AMD's Zen4 is vastly better than Raptor Lake at low power as already tested by Anandtech. So how about some balanced journalism.

Really? Did you even read what you quote? For the Apple, "the CPU part is limited to 25 Watt", while for the Intel the 157W will go entirely to the CPU. Not 10x but over 6x it is.

And M2 Max have 512 bit memory controller with 400Gbyte/s throughput. Raptor have only 128 bit memory controller and real average throughput 80Gbyte/s with DDR5 5600...
