In short, it seems that the company is gauging US demand for releasing a Nothing smartphone.

Makes sense. Release a partially functional product to gauge demand, because basing demand on a product people won't buy because they don't want something that sort-of works due to only partial compatibility is a completely logical thing to do. Genius.
