Nvidia Lovelace AD102 RTX 4090 to have 800 W power limit, laptop variants tamed at 175 W could result in wide performance deltas compared to desktop

Power limits for Nvidia's upcoming Lovelace generation of GPUs have leaked indicating large differences between corresponding desktop and laptop variants. The flagship AD102 is rated at 800 W, and it will be a desktop-only GPU. GPUs from AD103 to AD106 will be available for desktops and laptops. Though the power limits seem high, the actual TGP figures are likely to be much lesser.

The interesting values really are TDPs of desktop 4090, 4080, 4070. If too high,
- buy AMD,
- if ever at reasonable prices relative to time passed since launch, RTX 3000,
- if appearing at all, RTX 3000 Super, which should simply port RTX 3000 to TSMC 5 or 4nm,
- notebooks with RTX 4000 and reasonable prices, TDPs, cooling, display ratios and keyboard layouts if appearing Q1/2023,
- strongly discounted RTX 3000 notebooks or
- wait for RTX 4060 TI if AD104.

The 4080/4070 could be manageable even if they use more power. But for the 4090 we might see a repeat of that scenario where Amazon's MMO game destroyed badly designed 3090s.

It depends on TDP and build / firmware quality. Bad quality for medium TDP can destroy a card. Assuming good or better quality, solid stand and default settings (except for a BIOS switch), these TDP levels allow the following:

320W: 3 slots <37dB

350W: 3 slots <42~43dB

450W: 4 slots air cooled reasonable noise

~550W: water cooled via radiator or combined with air cooling for acceptable noise

~550W: only air cooled is stupid

600~900W: I do not know. Maybe water cooling with huge external radiator. Maybe a server rig. Why not buy A series or server GPUs right away? Instead buying multiple xx80 tier cards at ~320W each is the machine learner's advice.

Dude what

I think it's insane.

How is it insane? If we are openly welcoming 700-800W desktop gpus there's really no reason to be shocked since laptop gpus will at least draw the same amount of power of the current gen. Desktop gpus are literally doubling energy consumption
