The MacBook Pro 14 cannot utilize the full performance of Apple's M1 Max SoC

Apple offers the MacBook Pro 14 with the faster M1 Max SoCs, but the power adapter will be a limiting factor when you stress the CPU & GPU at the same time. This means the larger MacBook Pro 16 is a better choice if you want to use the full performance of the M1 Max.

So, you say the package takes 42-54 W and that a 96 W PSU is not enough to power it. Where in the world does the rest of the power go? It's at least 40 W. Also, none of the workloads you've measured stayed that high. Even your stress test averaged 75 W at the wall, meaning there was some 20 W headroom. And you blame the PSU? 140 W in a thin 14" laptop is a lot. You say that the fans have plenty of headroom but that's some power. I wouldn't be surprised if 140 W didn't make any difference. This seems intentional. Or it's a bug. If you have a PSU rated for 96 W continuous and you go down to 75 W after a little while, either the PSU is crap or there is something else going on.

Ditto. Even if it really goes beyond the power of the PSU you have the battery. Definitely seems intentional, provided the 40W actually went somewhere.
