The overhauled UI includes a redesigned Start menu, new system icons, rounded corners and redesigned hubs for Action Center and Settings, plus revamped core apps like Painter, Notepad etc. The store side is rumored to offer more incentives for developers, and the support for big.LITTLE cores will bring changes to the CPU scheduler.

The most important question is: will people buying computers with Win10 get the free update.

If it ends up being as a big change as rumors make it be, then no. Probably a discount and that's it.

QuoteTom from Moore's Law Is Dead believes that it could land some time in October this year and will also support CPU scheduling for the upcoming Intel Alder Lake big.LITTLE design.

He said October 25 for Alder Lake's launch, I don't think he mentioned a release date for Windows 11. I guess you could expect the Windows update to come at least a month or two before the CPUs are available.

This announcement of Win11 coming out is going to be another in a long line of "M$.... Are you kidding me ?". They have turned Win10 into a PITA with their updates that have broken so many things (que Brittany Spears song..... Oppps I Did It Again..). Win7 was solid with minor updates and SP 1-3. Less of a pain than the Win10 updates then updates to fix the updates. They kept rolling out changes and improvements that should have been done before release. They shut off updates for Win7 to force Win10 adoption. Now Win10 is probably going the same route because... there is a new version called Win11 ! And... we're going to get new menus !!! Whoopee ! And it wont do anything better that Win10 or Win7 did ! Ain't that great ! And it will be full of bloatware that Win10 had...it won't function without Candy Crush..or Xbox extensions.  This is a great way to force computer users to update... to Apple... or to Linux.

Garth Bock

Now for the disturbing news. M$ has revealed in the past that options in Win10 will no longer be available. You will beed a M$ account to log into your computer. (If you drank the Kool aid and believe you HAVE to login with an account.. you got lied to). Setting up an offline account on Win10 gives a prompt that you will have Limited Experience... BS ! M$ will be the ones with a limited experience. They have mentioned that the next version will not have the option to disable or decrease their ability to pull back "User Experience" and "Diagnostic Data" .  That means they can retrieve anything they want. Still feel good about it ? That also goes for pushing ads at you. They way they are heading they might as well codename it Colossus... and will soon be as powerless as Forbin.

Garth Bock

Second sentence.... NEED...not beed....

Final line... We will be as powerless as Forbin.

Sorry for the typos...

"Microsoft has not really improved it in any meaningful way and the need for something new is quite strong in many users. "

What are you talking about? Win 10 did start well but was indeed improved greatly over time. Just think the level of security, flexibility and compatibility it reached even with very old machines. Its an amazing OS and stating that is false and offensive for the many people that work at it.

And a name change is not really needed to make improvements or change UI. If they do it they will for marketing and financial prospective. Not because people want a different UI... They just should allow people to customize it more, UI is the less important thing of an OS anyway,

Oh, I'm pretty sure this new version will be offered for free — quite insistently, even, so that you'll have to install it even if you don't really want to, as happened with Windows 10. Whatever this new version is called, it'll be better at spying on you, and will probably restrict you in new, bold, innovative ways.

They skipped 9 for a very simple reason - Windows 9x (e.g. 95 or 98).
Anything that used a wildcard after the 9 (which was apparently very widespread) would assume the new Windows 9 was a relic from the 90s.

This, of course, is just a vile insinuation about Windows and Windows application developers. I'd understand this kind of hatred today, but not when speaking of the golden 90's days.
Here's the facts. When you poll for Windows version programmatically, you leverage a specific function, written by Microsoft and supplied through Windows SDK. These will yield:
an INT (0x80000000 - GetVersion() with a mask),
or a GUID ({8e0f7a12-bfb3-4fe8-b9a5-48fd50a15a9a}),
or a STRUCT (DWORD MajorVersion + DWORD MinorVersion + ...),
or a CHAR ARRAY ("CHICAGO'\0'"),
or a BOOLEAN (VersionHelpers.h > IsWindowsXPSP2OrGreater()).
Quite possibly, the only place where you'll find a STRING that reads "Windows 95", is in Registry: under
"HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProductName".
And one thing you can be certain about in this world, is that a software developer would never rely on a STRING being matched.
P. S.: Come to think of it, I'm not even sure if "ProductName" key had existed before Windows 2000.
P. P. S.: We don't use anything like "wildcards", because we have bit masks and ENUM's to SWITCH on, they are just way faster.

Linux works pretty well if you do office stuff, internet. Even 3D stuff like Blender

Linux is pretty amazing for many things in my field (computer networks and clouds). It's also great for LaTeX and scientific articles, greatly enjoy the way I can fully customize it to optimize my productivity.

Nevertheless, to this date, it absolutely sucks in providing a decent Office alternative. LibreOffice is not up to snuff. OnlyOffice looks great but it's frustrating AF. There are many other names that package these two (nextcloud/owncloud), they all suck. So no, unless you never used Microsoft Office or do not know how to take advantage of its features, Linux is only "passable" for office work.
