The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains one of the most beautiful games even four years after its release. However, the Nintendo Switch's limited power holds the game back, from its resolution to its often low framerates. However, a new video now shows how the triple-A title could look if it had been paired with more powerful hardware, or hardware that is capable of playing it in 8K with ray tracing enabled.

What is it that they are using here, an RTX 3080? Whatever level of performance it is, it will become cheap in 2-3 years. With the possible exception of an actual 8K display.

VR is going to need to be pushed hard within 5 years, because high-end GPUs will start to make light work of 4K/8K, and that will trickle down to integrated eventually.

Besides, I just watched the video, and while it looks really good, I'm fairly sure you can get equal effects (in this case) without the need of ray-tracing (and also... 8K? Really? They did that just because they can, 4K is more than enough, even 1080p with a good amount of antialiasing is good, unless you play in a 80" screen having your head 10cm close to the screen, you will then notice the jaggies... And you will become blind as well.)

A move to a Turing GPU (surely not Ampere?) and *docked* 4K using DLSS is plausible. I don't know about the FPS or detail settings but that's for Nintendo to figure out. They can even keep the 720p screen in this scenario, because who really cares at that size?

The same YouTube channel, Digital Dreams, did a 4K ray tracing Breath of the Wild video exactly 1 year earlier, on Mar. 16, 2020. They also did 8K videos in November/December.

It's all about showing off, in particular it is easier to do this because the game was designed for weak Wii U and Nintendo Switch and emulation has improved.

I have no idea if ray tracing even matters here. In general it still looks bad in most games, even with 3080/3070. Ray tracing will actually matter in 2024 and (some) game devs will learn to use it correctly instead of making it the next Bloom.

So you think GTX 2080's and even GTX 1080's are "cheap" now? Wow, you've been smoking that fairy dust I think. VR, until it's made very cheap and you have to have it for things like work, will only ever be niche. You'd have to have a decade or so of viable AR and by then it will be full on animal farm extinction for most of humanity.

RTX 3080 Founders Edition MSRP is $700. The current inflated GPU pricing is a temporary situation, so I don't count it. After 2 generations, that level of performance will be around $300 or something. Cheap.

If cheaper 2025 GPUs run 4K at high frame rates, why would anyone buy a high-end GPU? They have to push for VR gaming just to get people buying GPUs intended for 8-16K and even higher frame rates. Foveated rendering using eye tracking will reduce the amount of performance needed for VR anyway.

I suspect that a "new" tech ,not necessarily VR, will be schemed/dreamed up by nvidia once RT is easily 4k/60fps in x60 mainstream cards. VR requires expensive equipment separate from the expensive equipment you already had to buy just to play in 2d, plus it requires ever more expensive living space and people are lazy, vr would require some pretty good physical interaction lol. You'd have to have a transformation beyond games, like smartphones, to get VR as viable imo. I suspect mining isn't just some shadowy miners and nvidia is most likely involved among other virtual monopolies.

One gpu gen is 2-3 years so you're talking 4-6 yrs before x60 cards can do full RT 4k/60 in all games, in well optimized games they can do that now like FH4. So yeah something must be "done" by nvidia because 8/16k isn't going to be enough to convince people to shell out a premium over 4k saturated ownership, like dvds vs blu ray vs uhd disks. Only way is obviously volume pricing, meaning non-gamers must be more involved.

Ha! pointless. Textures in BotW are for 720p, 1080p at most. What result do you get when you run such a game in 8k? nothing, a waste of GPU power. This game is made to be run in 1080p.
If you want to tun this game above 1080p you need a new, improved texture pack, plus some full screen anti-aliasing, because meshes also are not made for high resolutions.
Why not run Mario Bros in 8K? very useful.
