ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 & L15 Gen 2: Lenovo's budget enterprise series updated with Tiger Lake & Thunderbolt 4

Lenovo updates the inexpensive ThinkPad L series without a big announcement. Both the new Lenovo ThinkPad L14 Gen 2 and ThinkPad L15 Gen 2 are optimized for enterprise customers. They keep the same design as their predecessors, but contain the new Intel Tiger Lake chips.

Only the E14/E15 has 2 x M.2 SSD but one of them is the slower often DRAM-less M.2 2242. L14/L15 have only 1 M.2 2280 SSD slot. In the HDD model, the other slot is used for Intel Optane memory.

It's about product differentiation. Lenovo has no shame to put some awful IdeaPad level 360Hz PWM below 99% brightness panel in E series (maxed out 10gen i7) so think bezels are nothing for them.

Bought Ryzen L14, returned it immediatelly due to terrible build quality - palmrest could be twisted and was creaky af. Dont know why reviewers tout them as being of good build quality, they are not. The whole palmrest area top and bottom is solely made out of plastic, only battery makes it bit more rigid.

That prominent Intel logo really checks out! The whole thing just screams "obsolete" with its effin chunky bezels and 16:9 screen in 2021. Intel really is the best fit here.

They are trowing the brand into the gutter. Don't let the conservative design fool you, the original Thinkpads were quite futuristic for their time. I just don't see the point of this computer. Before anyone jumps the trigger to say "but this is for corporate buyers seee," do bear in mind I have been in that role quite a few times and this obsolete model still doesn't pass the mustard test.

Unfortunately in Thinkpad world if you want at least 2 SODIMM slots, you either go "cheap" with L series or go broke with P (non S) series. Even worse, if you want that and Ryzen then you are stuck with L series.

HP Elitebook G7/8 is a much better choice in this regards. The only downside, for me at least, is their trackpoint only has 2 buttons compared to Thinkpads 3.
