Intel must deliver better products than 'lifestyle company' Apple can, claims new CEO Pat Gelsinger

With Bob Swan gone, new Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has set out a bold aim for the chipmaker ahead of the beginning of his reign next month. Apparently, he wants Intel to build better chips than the Apple M1, which has impressed with its custom ARM cores' performance. Naturally, Gelsinger belittled Apple as a 'lifestyle company in Cupertino'.

Intel should really focus on how to improve its product as it fits in people's lives. Apple can teach Intel a thing or two about user-centric design like user experience, expectation and engineering products to cater to people.

On the other hand, I'm going to get my popcorn to watch this one. Really love it when two juggernauts go at each other.

High and mighty talk from the creator of the 14nm+++++++++ and performance loss through security oversights. Meanwhile, AMD with its tiny budget and resources treads all over the server, desktop and soon-to-be mobile space. Intel's fab advantage is gone and is now a liability. Thanks to their haste to lay off a bunch of old white men. Intel can reap what it sow many years ago. Congrats.

When seeing how epically Intel has failed it is obvious there are a multitude of reasons. Some of the decisions that led to this sorry state would have been made long ago, however its almost certain that a lack of value and respect for their people, their skills, knowledge and capability would be chief among them.

Intel, the market abusing bully that nearly destroyed AMD with numerous illegal practices, started to enter Nokia/Blackberry/HTC status with outdated, inefficient products, lack of innovation and insufficient R&D.

Bravo, AMD! Your time has come, BUT AMD 5000 + RTX 3000 laptops are getting really expensive thia year...

Haha, bold claims from CEO of company which doesnt  have any ace in sleeve. AMD/Apple are better in every aspect of CPU design  and on top of that Intel own chip foundries  have problems. Intel needs miracle to be competitive again sooner than in ~2025.  They need to redesign whole core completely- AMD and Apple both have significant advantages on chip design level compared to Intel.  I wont miss Intel at all - they were cheeky enough to serve us Skylake over and over again year by year, now its time to pay for haughtiness

Quote from: Redaktion on January 15, 2021, 19:47:17Intel certainly has plenty of work to do before it catches the sophistication of TSMC...Intel is yet to switch to a 7 nm manufacturing process.
It is a well-established fact that TSMC is quite ahead of Intel with its 5nm mass-produced node & 3nm node being risk-produced & Apple, AMD are ahead of Intel, with their processor designs but, haven't the experts also agreed on the fact that TSMC 7nm node = Intel 10nm = Samsung 7nm ?

Example - Intel 10nm isn't bigger than AMD 7nm, you're just measuring wrong ( https://www.pcgamer.com/chipmaking-process-node-naming-lmc-paper )

@Bjork
Well, size of capacitors is not only way how to compare manufacturing processes.  Intel  10nm is supposedly  almost equal to 7nm TSMC in transistor density, however Tiger Lake(10nm++ Intel) offers significantly less performance per watt compared to Ryzen Renoir(7nm TSMC). Also its not secret that Intel yields are significantly worse than TSMC.

"Calling a former partner a lifestyle company is below the belt, in our opinion, even if Gelsinger has a point."

When it comes to Apple, it's actually a fair statement. Intel chips did have issues with performance and temperatures, BUT apple's design on their latest products aggravated that by using sub-par cooling solutions. Just look at the macbook air with an useless fan.

People love to fall on Apple's marketing lies and call all their decisions "user centric" when none of those users asked for anything that Apple usually comes up with. They just accept it like obedient sheeps.

removal of 3.5mm jack? No one asked for it
Magsafe charger on iPhones? No one asked for it, either.
3D Touch? Cool idea, but no one came up with it as a suggestion. Alas, when people actually liked it and accepted, Apple took it away lol.

And on Mac, things are more dramatic sometimes, like when they dropped 32bit support for Apps on Catalina. I guess only iPad has actually moved forward somehow.

The plural of sheep is sheep. The plural of moose is moose, even though the plural of goose is geese.
