Huawei MateBook X and MateBook 14 come to Europe with 3:2 displays and compact designs

Huawei is bringing the MateBook X and Renoir-powered MateBook 14 to Europe. The two machines will arrive in October for €1,499 and €849, respectively. However, the MateBook 14 will be the more powerful of the two with up to a Ryzen 7 4800H processor.

That Matebook 14 would have been one incredibly attractive device if not for its ... uh, "advantage"?, of having dirt-slow DDR4-2666. By 2020 standards that is decidedly sub-par memory speed, and will hamper performance in anything utilizing the iGPU. DDR4-3200 is the new standard, and anything premium would go for LPDDR4x-4266.

Using 2666 memory have one advantage on H-series. Slower Infinity link, what should lower power draw in idle and during work. That's why the units have max TDP at 40W (even when rated for 45) with little 45W for short burst.
These are still Ultrabooks so the units will be super fast anyway. Huawei know how to tweak the AMD cpu, so I am calm.

Sorry, but no. There are plenty of 15-25W U-series laptops out there running DDR4-3200 with no heat or power issues nor battery life concerns. The increase in power draw from the IF link runing at 1600MHz rather than 1333 is negligible, especially in a higher TDP laptop design (any X amount of added heat output is more noticeable the lower the base amount of heat output is). The IF in Renoir is eminently capable of running at high speeds, much more so than previous Ryzen chips, so DDR4-3200 is no challenge whatsoever.

Besides that, LPDDR4x allows for downclocking memory when not in heavy use while also operating at a lower voltage when in use, and as such represents significant power savings over regular DDR4.

Besides that, what you are saying about TDP is also wrong - though OEMs can configure them for 40W if they want to, the 45W number is the specification for long-term sustained power draw. In short boost scenarios 4000-series H APUs can draw near 70W. The only reasons for running at 40W would be a (manufacturer implemented) lower TDP setting, or some form of thermal throttling (CPU temperature, device skin temperature, etc.).

It doesn't matter if "Huawei knows how to tweak AMD CPUs" if they are ignoring one of the chief performance-affecting characteristics, which for Ryzen is RAM speed and IF clocks. Given lower RAM bandwidth, there is no tuning Huawei or anyone else can do to make up for this in (always RAM bandwidth limited) iGPU scenarios. This also largely applies to scenarios in which IF clocks significantly affect CPU performance.
