In a move that will almost certainly have an impact on global consumer tech supply chains, US President Donald Trump's administration dramatically escalated simmering tensions with China by revoking Hong Kong's special trade status.

Chinese government: Says Hongkong is a part of China — Surprised when Hongkong is treated as a part of China.

This is meme material already...

Jacob

China has earned a rather harsh response from trading partners; between the stripping of rights for Hong Kongers, the mass incarceration of millions of Uighurs, and the systematic and blatant theft of intellectual property, there is little reason to tream them with anything except extreme skepticism.

Kang

Good!
Chinese government deserves everything thrown at them for all their lies, cheating and stealing + unleashing the Woo Flu to the world.

Unsurprisingly from the media it was not called  the Chinese Government "Escalates" when changed its "1 country 2 systems".

Are you defending the Red Chinese?  Seriously?
Whatever befalls them is well deserved.  They are responsible for untold death and economic disaster on a global scale.
Trump is the ONLY leader willing to hold them accountable.

'If companies like Apple are cut off from access to Foxconn manufacturing plants, for instance, the consequences would be incalculable."

You mean, they will stop scamming people for a while? That's actually great news.

But yeah, aside from this, this is communist China we are talking about. If some sacrifices need to be done to move the manufacturing to other places, then, there is no other way around.
And it is not like there arent other countries there, you know. There's South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, Brasil, etc. You guys sound like those college kids who never read about history and just eat whatever they find around in social networks.

Is here the new reddit now? It is a tech webiste, so please stop posting your political opinions. The trade war will only worsen already bad supply problem.

Quite. You can't have your cake and eat it too. HK was given special trading status as long as it stayed highly autonomous -- which it is no longer.

I agree for non political opinions, because it should not be here.

"If companies like Apple are cut off from access to Foxconn manufacturing plants, for instance, the consequences would be incalculable. "

Whoever wrote that made a mistake, as Foxconn is Taiwanese company, and have factories all over the world. Thou the biggest ones are in China, they have in India, some European countries, also they have one that is in process to be finished of in Wisconsin.....so..... :)
Anyway not fan of Apple inc products.

Oh yeah? So maybe Taiwan is the next? Do NOT underestimate the Chinese government! They're crazy enough to take Taiwan by force if the US doesn't play nice. No matter the war or anything. They're crazy enough to do it...

I don't want to bring politics here but Taiwan isn't internationally recognized as a sovereign country. UN, USA, EU, not a single one of them recognizes Taiwan as a country (or they at least acknowledge the One China policy under which Taiwan belongs to China). Only a handful of governments maintain diplomatic relationships with them (mostly in South America). Officially, they're a province of China to most of the world.

Great... one article with a Trump photo and we get a bunch of "kek" morons and their brainwashed MAGAt buddies show up in the comments. 🤦‍♂️
