Successors to the Precision 7540 and Precision 7740 are on their way, and a leaked advert has confirmed that Dell has given them a complete redesign. Predictably called the Precision 7550 and Precision 7750, the two laptops are expected to arrive later this month, but there may be some surprises in store, including no PointStick and possible DGFF incompatibilities with older models.

Tony

Includes a numpad with 3 stupid extra calculator keys, but no dedicated Home/PgUp/PgDown/End keys...
I'm starting to think somebody at Dell personally hates those keys.

Nah, It's just that the designers are working under necktie-damage-braind-dead morons.

Typical design by a corporate product committee.

I'd bet it came down to this:

Dell Executives: bUT mY MAcboOK dOEsn'T HavE ThoSE kEYs!
Dell Engineers: ...

Nice, finally machines with dedicated mouse buttons!
That's nothing new. They were there before. Two sets of them even (one for pad, one for stick).

This update is terrible. If this is the future of Precision line, I guess I will be switching to Lenovo then. Or just go with Alienware. It's sad when a gaming laptop is more attractive for work than a workstation. I really sometimes wonder who do these companies employ as product managers.

Wasted 1 key for Power button? WTF stupid idea, the power button has to be dedicated and not mixed up with keyboard.

Still the tiny up/down button, specifically discriminating big finger users?

Power jack moved towards center, to me this make inserting the power point more difficult from front. Non critical but annoying.

Audio jack still at right hand side, non critical buy annoying.

HDMI port moved to the back is good for me.  I ever inserted USB into HDMI port at my 7720 because they look alike when we are not paying attention to it.

Is Dell competing with someone for the worst keyboard design award? Who designs those ridiculous layouts? I imagine design consultations with regular users went something like this "well ok, so you are saying shortened arrow keys are useless, power button should be placed somewhere else and be separate, calculator keys are stupid, home, pg dn/up insert keys are placed bad. We value your opinion, but your proposition does not meet out concept and does not look as innovative as on macs on which we designed this layout. We appreciate your opinion that you will be annoyed by this design for as long as you have this computer and you will be missclicking these missplaced keys every day, we hear you that our keyboard is useless for software development, but we came up to the conclusion we know better what you need. We wanted to get rid of numpad too but some old, not in touch with Apple design standards guy made us leave it, we are pushing Dell to fire him. To be honest we think keyboard on a computer is useless anyways and next year we want to get rid of it and use only voice commands like on siri"

I don't buy this laptop with this key configuration. being a 3d computer graphics professional who works on the computer for over 10 hours a day I would like a workstation with more functionality, with more keys, more robust but with better dissipation. enough of this stupid tendency to imitate the damned pussy macbooks. I don't need style but performance. I hope at least thet Dell will provide an option with the previous keyboard with all the mouse bottons and the point stick.

Yp

Omg! I love that everyone here say the same. The keyboard just looks so terrifying that I just doubt the rest of their internal design. :-X
