Because of the Corona-Breakout a large number of people is staying home causing Internet usage to climb up. Although the data usage it is not yet absolutely critical, the EU is already discussing ways to restrict data traffic in favor of essential services. This led to the suggestion that Netflix could temporarily lower its video resolution to SD level.

LOL. Them @ Netflix HQ are soooo scared rn! What, you're gonna take away your little debit card, after all the classics they remade for you (with EXTRA diversity)? And all these documentaries and non-partisan investigation series you paid for with your sub money? Bad soyboy. Bad!

P. S. you have to be absolutely mental to a) suggest lowering streaming res is "essential" or "needed"; b) believe that that's ever going to happen.

People paying 3x more will get same as people who pay only for SD. That might end up in court and its easy win for people who decide to do.

@Thanos Seems you like to take it up your a**

Ask the EU for your money back, as it's their petition, not Netflix's.

Netflix is the one that has a contract to uphold. Whether and how the EU would compensate them is between them.

This can be solved at network level. For one, as network gets saturated, you simply won't have enough bandwidth to support the highest resolutions/ qualities. You either reduce the resolution/ quality, or you'll have to pause periodically and let the buffer fill. And then networks do have mechanisms to prioritize or cap certain traffic. Depending on contracts (what guarantees they actually make) and current state of affairs (state of emergency changes the game), ISPs could clamp down on video streaming, reducing available bandwidth.
