Apparently, the new Exynos 990 will not power the Galaxy S11

Samsung announced a brand new SoC, the Exynos 990, yesterday. The chipset's support for 120 Hz displays and 108 MP cameras may have led the public to believe it would be the SoC powering the Galaxy S11 phones but will apparently not be the case.

That's great relief. Makes a lot of sense except 990 is already 9820 grade(but not impossible since the latest Kirin midrange also roughly matched their previous flagship) and the timing of the announcement.

Max Weinbach's belief that the Exynos 990 isn't Samsung's flagship mobile SoC for 2020 is built on a notion that there is another even better chip, the Exynos 9830, waiting in the wings. But, if that is so, what is the Exynos 990 for?

Max has probably got this wrong. The Exynos 990 is probably just a renamed Exynos 9830. (Note: Just because internal documents refer to the latter doesn't mean the marketing department can't come along and change things if there is a perceived business benefit in doing so.) That is most likely all that has happened here.

This ignores the fact that there's actually an Exynos 980 that was released last month.
