You know, it might actually be USEFUL if you listed the maximum memory for units you're reviewing.

Purchased one of these used off of ebay as a beater work laptop. I
fully agree the mouse pad is novel but very clumsy to use in reality.
I have avoided the fan issue so far....knock on wood ! I had to put
four more gigs of ram in mine also. Do not spend a lot of money on
on of these....

Doesn't Lenovo have some method of keeping typing from jumping all over the page?  My HP did.  One never knows where Lenovo will start or jump to when typing.  Hate keyboard also.

We bought 18 of these laptops for work, every single one shuts down on its own while users are working and give blue screen dumps.  This model is rubbish and I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy it.

Just say NO to lenovo. I had a harddisk fail and tried to use the recovery disk I made when I got the E530. I did not work properly. It started and the then asked for another disk. So if you made the disk you should check it out. I dont know how you would test it except with a new harddrive. Do it before you are out of warranty. They want $50 for there mistake. This is no IBM. There whole web site is a scam. Just dont go there. I had no fan issue with mine but the graphic cant display CAD drawing well. That touch pad sucks when typing. There is no way to disable it. $300 or less is what you should pay. junk. Fine if you watch netflix LE NO NO STINKPAD

I wonder what a dedicated graphics card i doing in a business notebook, since the Ivy Bridge carries a HD 4000 graphics card ??????  The three former notebooks of mine all had dedicated graphics card, and all did melt down after two years and a few months - due to the dedicated graphics card.

The new thinking in graphics cards is that the laptop comes with a very capable 3D card (GT 635M), but it is turned off all the time, and you are running on the HD4000 all the time.  When a window "needs" high-performance 3D, the GT 635M is activated and runs *only for that window*.  This saves a ton of power and makes laptop meltdowns very unlikely, for obvious reasons.  If you wish you may turn on the GT 635M all the time in the BIOS, but that kills the battery and wastes power.

Good laptop but have a problem with all the installed blootware. After a clean startup and no programs running, 80% of the memory is used and 120 processes are running. This isn't normal

Hi, I just purchased this notebook (Thinkpad Edge e530) off Lenovo's outlet website under the "new" category. It was a good price (under $300) w/2nd generation Intel Core i3-2350M Processor. I was wondering if this is a good deal or is it 'too good to be true" (assuming I can get past the loud fan and touch pad issues other people are having).

To anyone looking to buy this laptop: the pulsating fan issue is still present and, just as other reviewers have mentioned, the touchpad is very picky. I am OK with my purchase but I can certainly see others having huge issues with the above. Great review, btw.

I bought this laptop 6 moth back and now the laptop is dead..When i reach IBM service center in Chennai without even opening the laptop the service guy claims liquid damage(because one USB port was dark and the other two was dusty) even I explained him the reason and spoke even to the next level lead they refuse to accept they asked me to take back the system.I have no option left and I have some valuable date left I asked them to proceed further now they have given me quote for RS 20000. i hve used Dell, Acer laptops so far and never faced such issues with the product and even lenovo support is quite pathetic. I expected that the quality of IBM product will be too and even I paid 650$ for such crappy produt and poor service. We other product which already available for less price and better service.

This article mentions 16 gb ssd and 1600 x 900 resolution, but neither of these are actually available as options

I absolutely HATE the touchpad on this model. I hate this so much, this is the single and only thing on this notebook but enough to make me want to throw this model out of the window. I got this assigned at work and I didn't have choice. To be honest, if you can go with the 520 model (older with classic touchpad) go with it. The older touchpads were excellent, although smaller because needed buttons, this touchpad is absolute disgrace and total monstrous crap!! It feels like rubber, wacky, noisy, hard to press, imprecise, drifts away, choppy, clicky ..... I am using mouse all the time. This is total embarrassment for Lenovo. I hate this so much every day that I dread when I have to touch it, I wish the machine just dies so I can get a new replacement different model.

Fan issue - I also noticed the pulsating fan and also have from time to time the "Fan mulfunction" when booting. Heck, I don't care, that's minor compared to the stupid trackpad. If the fan mulfunctions, at least I get replacement. ... Yadada sorry for being a troll, I just had to let this go or I will rip it apart this touchpad.

Nice, review, but still no solution for the pulsating fan, which is very annoying. No response from Lenovo on their support forum either, except that they "can't replicate the issue". Strange, because my first E530 had the issue, and needed to be replaced because of fan error popped up during bootup. 2nd E530 also has the same issue, and a screeching body. Great quality? Not exactly. Support? Totally not.
I really miss the IBM period where having happy customers was priority.

I wouldn't purchase this notebook (E530/E430) until Lenovo fix the pulsating fan issue noted in this review and by the many unhappy owners at Lenovo's community forum http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge/E530-pulsing-whiny-fan-no-low-load/m-p/806841
