Asus N550JK-CN109H Notebook Review

Dignified. Laptops featuring a strong graphics are found a dime a dozen. However, only few sport a matte IPS screen, first-rate subwoofer sound, and a quality aluminum chassis. Does Asus have what it takes for the championship in the multimedia sector?

About the display - it could be that ASUS have made worse illumination or something. The matrix of the display is the same, but the built may be different. There are Samsung PLS matrixes apparently too used in some versions of the laptop.

About power consumption. It could be to do with the raw Windows 8.1. despite the fact that it's been out for a while now. It gliches on my N550JV with power settings (and others). Initially it would show high consumption in idle mode (17 Watts), like in this review of N550JK, however after playing with switching some devices on and off I managed to get it down to 9 Watts.

Consequently goes the battery life...

P.S. I got the JV version because of the screen (didn't want to risk!). Half the contrast is IMPORTANT, especially after the proper home monitor of 3000 contrast. And I got it cos I don't plan on playing games (so no need of 850M), but better deal on the top version (4700HQ, 12 Gb).

I am really disappointed with the monitor, i made a mistake buying this notebook for professional purposes. No serious photo-video editing is possible. I need to double check all of my work with specific plugins and on different monitors.

It could be interesting to compare n550jk to n56jk...if you consider models with the same specifics, the only palpable difference is about the case and so the battery: n56 battery is external, easy to remove or upgrade, instead n550 battery is on the inside, difficult to change and not upgradeble...So i prefer the n56jk although n56 class is order. What do you think about it?

Your reviews are very picky. I would say, it looks like you present positives in a shade of better competitors, but negatives in full brightness. But how can you explain that your test shows 284cd/m2 while this test: http://www.digitalversus.com/laptop/asus-n550jk-p20711/test.html documents 329cd/m2?

I bought this laptop a week ago but now it is in service because of awful backlight bleeding. Laptop is amazing, screen is amazing but screen flexes a little and I think it is difficult to make flexible screen without backlight bleed. This might be its flaw. I hope I get it fixed... It is strange why they didn't replace it for me but sent to Asus certified service..

for a quick mini review:

FHD IPS matte screen looks really great, colors are very nice and you can use Asus color presets to change 'warmth' of the screen.
Sound system is astonishing, I don't understand why some people complain about it. Sounds are really deep and it feels like you are in cinema. Haven't ever used it at full sound, because even 50% is too much.
Keyboard is wonderful, I got used to it really quickly.
TouchPad is not that bad - I got used to tapping gestures and didnt have to use buttons. This way it is really pleasant experience.
I played GTA 4 on FHD and high graphics. I believe I could have gone on very high easily, but it was enough for me, as I'm not a graphics freak. Didn't notice any overheating problems, fans spinned quietly. I played for like 3 hours. Even AC-DC converter didn't heat up.
About the charger - it is really massive.
You can always hear fan spinning and HDD ticking. It is not very quiete. IMO opinion HDD has to be replaced as soon as possible because it is slowing down this machine considerably.
Can't really say anything about a battery, because havent used it on battery yet.
Build quality is very nice, except for the screen and DVD drive sticking out a bit.
The last thing is finger prints - backcover and top cover catch all of your fingerprints and it seems impossible to clean them :D But thats not a problem for me.
I had no problems with drivers, just simply installed everything from Asus disc and then updated video card driver.
