Review Update Dell XPS 13-9333 Touchscreen Ultrabook

Predictably great. Dell’s 2014 refresh of its critically-acclaimed XPS 13 brings with it a conservative selection of evolutionary enhancements, not least of which is the option of an included touchscreen. But can it still stand with the latest and greatest ultraportables?

Hiya! how about the lid and tilting it back - I read/saw on other pictures that it does not tilt back that much, the ratio looks very small. Could you say sth. about that - especially comparing it to other uktrabooks like the series 9 (15" edition! as I know the samsung13" has a 180 degree hinge that tilts back flat to a table ;) ), spectre, zenbook etc. THANKS!

Thanks for the review, just received mine, would like to point out though that you can also get one with a 4650cpu with 5000 Iris graphics (which is the version I have)

It makes high-pitched noises. A lot of users are complaining about it. It is not only a few units have the issue, but all of them do.
If you're over 50 years old or have problem with hearing, this unit is for yours. The screen can't open 180 degree (about 135 degree), and the screen also blocks the fan airflow, so it runs really hot.

We have a few at the office. Haven't had a problem with the screen tilting back, but some of the notebooks when completely idle do have the high-pitched noise. However, it's far better than the hardware problems we have with our Sony Vaio Pro, Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga, and other manufacturers.

This seems like a pretty good Ultrabook, but it has a number of demerits: no SD card, tilts when using touchscreen, a constant high pitch whine, mediocre audio to name a few.

What I don't understand it, under your new rating scheme, 85 points is the highest mark you give for any Ultrabook and it hardly seems appropriate for this "well above average" but far from "best available."  It seems like the rating of 85 points is equivalent to 91 under your old rating system.  This simply does not cream the Samsung Ativ 9, the Acer S7-392 nor the HP Spectre 13t-3000.  Your rating system seems increasingly arbitrary.

I think you guys REALLY should have mentioned SOMEWHERE that the laptop doesn't have SD card. After checking budgets and everything, I was about to buy it, just taking a look to a demo model in the shop when I noticed the missing SD card. I never checked it, it was never mentioned, but it is assumed there is one on every single laptop. Maybe not a 7-in-one adapter, but just the typical single SD card reader. It's mostly a standard.... Nope. Not on this one.
I wasted my time on a trip going to buy something assuming it would have it, just to find out.
My question now would be, what Core i7 8GB 128/256GB ultrabook can I buy that DOES have a SD slot?

My personal suggestion, please never buy any dell laptop. I have bought one dell inspiron 15  laptop and and its motherboard got short automatically with in one month of purchase. This was my first experience with Dell.
They don't even provide any stand by laptop to work in the mean while of they fix the issue.
I had lots of school assignments to complete. They don't even take care of your issues.

I had experience of two hp laptops, they are far more better in service than dell.

Please please don't buy Dell.

Hi,

I'm interested in buying an XPS 13, and would be very greatful is anyone who owns one could comment on whether the high pitched whine (coil whine) is still present in units purchased recently, and whether the laptop runs particularly hot or not.

I bought one, xps 13 touch screen 9333.
My considerations:
- battery life claimed up to 8 hours? It works up to 3 editing docs at 40% brightness
- screen flips absurdly very very little.
- fan is noisy and overheaing (its October )
- claimed spillproof keyboard is not.
- touch screen is far away from tablet responsiveness and if you touch it at the top it will bounce the keyboard half.

J'ai un Dell XPS 13 Gold (9333) depuis novembre 2013, avec Win 8.1 Pro, 8Go et SSD 256Go. je  travaille avec Office Pro, Adobe Première Pro, Photoshop et Autocad 2014. Au bureau, écran 2 de 24p 1920x1080, travail en réseau. Jamais eu de problème, très rapide,16h maxi à 8h mini, pour moi très bon appareil. :D :D

It seems quite clear that your unit has some type of problem.  I would consider having it serviced, especially while it's still within the warranty period just in case it's a hardware issue.


Regarding the missing SD card slot, sorry guys, this was merely a review update; we do not reiterate items such as ports which have not changed since the last review!
